► (1921-90) Novelista y dramaturgo suizo de lengua alemana. Su visión desesperada del mundo se revela en piezas teatrales como La visita de la vieja dama (1955). Otros grandes éxitos fueron Frank V (1960) y Los físicos (1962).

Dramaturgo suizo. Sus obras, influenciadas por Bertolt Brecht y el teatro del absurdo, fueron decisivas en el renacimiento del teatro alemán de posguerra. En sus tres primeras obras, Está escrito (1947), El matrimonio del Sr. Mississippi (1952) y Un ángel llega a Babilonia (1953), emplea algunas licencias cómicas sobre hechos históricos para expresar parábolas sobre la vida moderna. Su obra La visita de la vieja dama (1956), y el moderno drama de las moralidades, Los físicos (1962), le valieron el reconocimiento internacional. Después de 1970 escribió novelas policiales, radioteatros, ensayos y adaptaciones. Sus trabajos han sido traducidos a más de 50 idiomas.
